Learning Basic Photography
CAS Learning outcomes
-1: Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth
-2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process
-4: Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences
Before I had gone on a trip to Japan during G11 Semester 1 break, I had tried to learn photography, watching around 20 hours of content on photo composition, and generally how to just take good photos. At first I thought it was gonna be a breeze and I just had to apply what I had learned from Youtube to real life, however I couldn't have been more wrong. On the trip I had taken hundreds of photos and when I came to review the photos for some post editing I came to realize that I only around 5 photos was decent. After the trip I had made it my mission to take at least one photo a day of anything and to review how I could prove further. Below are a few images from the trip that I consider to be decent. (Images will be uploaded on a later date)

Rescued Glass (Creativity and Service)
1: Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth
2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process
4: Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences
5: Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively
Creating the poster for the club Rescued Glass allowed me to demonstrate my creativity and achieve several essential CAS learning goals.
This assignment helped me realize my natural knack for visual design and my ability to effectively express concepts via visuals in terms of recognizing my strengths and areas for improvement. However, I recognized the need for improvement in several areas, such as color choices and layout composition. By actively participating in the poster-making process, I actively focused on refining these talents and broadening my understanding of graphic design.
Taking on this task drove me to learn new skills along the way. When I began the work, I immediately discovered that making an appealing and effective poster required more than just fundamental design skills. To adequately express the club's message, I had to learn about good visual hierarchy, typography, and the use of photography. Investigating numerous design methodologies, soliciting peer critique, and experimenting with various design aspects enabled me to acquire a more extensive skill set in graphic communication. Furthermore, through multiple conversations with my peers, I learned the importance of effective communication in development.
